Child
Development
● 93% of the world’s children live in low to middle income countries
○ 43% of children in LMICs fail to reach their full
development potential
● Responsive Stimulation: early interventions that guide parents to
be sensitive and responsive
○ Have shown consistent benefits to children’s development
across several domains
● Medium effect of responsive stimulation interventions on cognitive
and language development
Laos
● Half of children in Laos fail to reach full developmental potential
○ Also low levels of play and health
● Only 5% of Lao mothers regularly play with under-5 child
○ 3% of Lao households own at least 3 kids books
Care for Child Development
● Responsive stimulation interventions: caregivers engage with child
while care professional watches
○ Activities: reading, singing, counting, naming, rattles, peek
a boo, playing with pots, stacking bowls
● Four Steps
○ Stage 1: Ask and Watch
○ Stage 2: Recommend Activities
○ Stage 3: Getting Commitment from Parents
○ Stage 4: Problem-Solving Around Barriers
● CCD has been implemented in 19 countries
○ Medium to large benefits in cognition, language and motor
for groups exposed to CCD
● Even only 2 sessions show improvement on children’s
development
○ Even just a single 10min session had improvements on
caregivers practices
● What we don’t know
○ What cultural adaptation looks like?
○ What is relative efficacy of family vs. community level
treatment formats?
Research Questions
● Is the adapted intervention acceptable and useful for families?
● Intervention effects on caregiving practices?
● Invention effects on child development
● Family vs. communal level interventions?
Measures
● Acceptability
