Includes all types of media products that either show or imply sexual acts or make sexual references or innuendoes, whether in humorous or dramatic context (btp 179) Graphic and explicit depictions of sexual activity. Typically seen as devoid of literary merit or artistic value. Started in 1953 and brought pornography into mainstream america: marilyn monroe was the first centerfold. More than a magazine: tv shows, jazz festival, fashion line, mansion, casinos, clubs, etc. 1962: start of the playboy interview : seen as a literary contribution. Panel study of 18-26 year olds over five decades. Have you seen an x-rated movie in the past year: 16% increase for young men over time, 8% increase for young women over time. Past research: consumption decreased as age increased. This study: since 1999, consumption among the 1961 and 1972 male cohorts has stayed at about the same levels.
