Settlement houses old houses in chicago , borrowed idea from the uk repurchased settlement in working class immigrant neighborhood , upper-class that move in to live in the immigrant population. Main purpose to get ppl exposed to each others (differences of classes) Documented all aspects of african american life in the south. Black tenements , small houses unpaved streets , described problems etc. Cultural- more ppl combined from all cultures, mixture. Share cropping, loop many people into the nation market ( draws more ppl from subsistence agriculture to commercial agriculture) Cash crops , more ppl , in the south. Cotton prices coming out of the civil war plummet , more southerners and other countries producing cotton themselves. Land as collateral if you have too much debt / cant pay the debt , end up being tenants on the farm . Hard to accumulate any kind of wealth.
