Document Summary

September 6, 2018 : organization of the nervous system. Peripheral nervous system: somatic nervous system (outside world: touch, smell, feel, etc) and autonomic nervous system (internal environment: keeping your heart beating, breathing, etc) The brain and spinal cord = the most protected organs. 3 layers called 3 meninge s or membranes. Dura mater: right attached to the bone (tough) Third ventricle leads down into the fourth ventricle. Csf supports the cns and provides cushioning against injury. Blood supplied from three main arteries: the anterior ( a lot inside), middle and posterior cerebral arteries. One anterior spinal artery and two posterior spinal arteries. Blood brain barrier and blood spinal cord barrier. Cns requires a stable and constant environment to function properly. Barriers are tightly packed together so there"s no gap. Brain barrier usually doesn"t let foreign substances in. Barrier is weak to allow monitoring of the chemical composition of blood.
