What is motivation: can be motivated by our drives or our desires, the energization and direction of behavior. An inner state of a desire (mentally based) or drive (biologically based) gives energy to our actions. Direction of behavior means that the energy is going towards something in particular. Direction could be basic or complex (food or med-school) Instinct theory and evolutionary psychology: human motivation was biologically based in our instincts. Instincts fixed patterns of behavior (behavior that we have no voluntary control over, unlearned, universal within the species, and are released by certain environmental factors: william mcdougal (1908) Whole range of human behavior is instinctually based. There (cid:271)e(cid:272)a(cid:373)e a lo(cid:374)g list of (cid:858)so (cid:272)alled(cid:859) i(cid:374)sti(cid:374)(cid:272)ts that pre(cid:448)e(cid:374)ted the theory from being parsimonious. Because there is so much observable aggression. (circular reasoning) Provides an insight in human behavior, but it did not give people an explanation of why.
