PSY 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Semantic Network, Representativeness Heuristic, Noam Chomsky
Document Summary
Rational and well-reasoned cognition, e. g. invention, raise next generations. And irrational ,e. g. wars, pollute environment, take drugs. Concepts are basic building blocks of abstract thoughts which referred to mental grouping of similar places, objects, people, ideas, events. Concept is to simplify all the information in our long-term memory. Semantic networks: concepts are stored in our long-term memory and are organized in hierarchical way. Priming concepts: when one concept in semantic network is activated, other closely correlated concepts and mind start to pop in minds. e. g. (cid:1910) . Meyer and schvaneveldt(1971), they presented participants in the pairs of letter strings, all participants are asked to determine whether both pairs of letter strings form words. Sometimes they form words, other times only one of them is word. On some trails, the pairs of letter strings are semantically related. E. g: nurse and doctor, on other trails, the pairs of strings are not semantically related, e. g: doctor and bread.
