Emergence of the trait approach: three forces. In this psychological landscape, psychologists started to recognize the existence of meaningful and stable aspects of personality. These aspects can be used to predict our thoughts, feelings, and behavior: the seminal work of gordon allport. Used to identify trait clusters (how different traits hang together) Two basic dimensions: extroversion v. introversion, emotional stability v. emotional instability, biological influences on personality. There are neurobiological, neuroanatomical, neurochemical influences that give rise to individual differences in personality.
