PSY 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Clive Wearing, Classical Conditioning, Implicit Memory
Document Summary
Without our memories we are creatures of mere sensation. Not tied to specific time or place. How to ride a bike, tying a shoe. Giving little bits of information to produce faster recognition. Masked stimulus is presented too fast for conscious identification. Responses are faster when primed with same category. Responses slower when primed with different category. Can measure change in reaction / performance. Lesioned rat cortices in an attempt to find out where those behavioral memories were stored. Could not find a specific part of the brain. Errors in learning increased with amount of cortex lesioned. Package of info that makes up a memory. Some cells will be linked in groups. Even simple assemblies might reverberate for half a second. Leads to continued firing / wiring = learning (?) Try and record out cells during task. Nodes/neurons in one level pass info onto nodes/neurons in next level.
