PSY 171 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Baby Talk, Visual Acuity, Statistical Significance
Document Summary
Qualitative - searching for meaningful themes, glean better initial understanding of a specific context, unexplored problems (small side), non-statistical, subjective summary may be the end goal of the whole research project. Quantitative - turning observations, test results into some kind of number, using averages, means, statistical descriptions, based on outcome of chosen statistical technique, researchers can determine whether or not there is support for their hypothesis, representative of sample population. Statistical significance - effect they"re interested in are due to real, genuine variability between participants over time, rather than chance or random fluctuations. Children have rights as research participants : right to informed consent, right to protection from harm. Agreement to participate based on clear standards, and purpose of study. Minors have their parents" consent, but children must also show verbal or written consent based on understanding.
