Self conscious emotions, children think about themselves in relation to others, are more complex. Only requires the ability to recognize one"s self in the mirror. When sibling realizes another sibling gets more attention. 3 and 4 year olds will squirm and hang their heads, approach to reconcile. 8 and 9 year olds, see the difference between guilt and personal responsibility. One does not need to feel guilt when it is not the individual"s fault. When they have done something to someone else. Children must be able to assess their own behavior and see if it is acceptable in other"s eyes, when others see them as deficient. When they have been socially rejected, struggling and can"t learn, when they lose a competition, when they have been insulted, taunted or bullied, when they try to seek acceptance and understanding from adults and they get criticism instead.
