BIOL 134 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Microbiology, Antibiotics, Embalming
Document Summary
Kill microbes or stop growth by lowering the temp. Some cell death from ice crystals disrupting membranes. Pressure: kills microbes by disrupting protein folding. Pressure on liquid samples is evenly distributed. Used for some food products to preserve flavor. Filtration: separates microbes from a solution or from the air. Air or water is sucked through a filter with very small holes; microbes are too big to pass through. 0. 22 micrometer filters will keep out most bacteria, but small bacteria/viruses can pass. 0. 01 micrometer filters will keep out even viruses. Some can pass right through most substances. Possible to sterilize items inside and out. Little penetration power (even water blocks it) Useful for sterilizing the air or outer surfaces. Few chemicals are so harmful to life that absolutely everything will be killed 100% Phenol: the original disinfectant, used by joseph lister. Pro: stable, works around other organic compounds, kills a tough bacterium. Cons: sticky, irritating to the skin, potentially toxic.
