Began in late 1500s, early 1600s england. Church of england (anglican church) broke away from roman catholic church (catholicism = faith and deeds) Martin luther (german) (lutheranism = faith, not by deeds) John calvin (french) (calvinism = predestination: the bible is the supreme authority, not any man or institution, the individual has a direct relationship to god, not through priest or institution. Puritans wanted to work within the church on english soil to purify the church. Separatists or pilgrims were people who believed the church was too corrupt to be purified sought to break away entirely from the church of england in order to.
