Senator joseph mccarthy was from wisconsin who built his career on trying to identify communists and attacking them verbally. David shine was taking off mccarthy"s staff and put into the army. Cohn pressured the army into giving shine special privileges. Mccarthy responded by saying that the army was doing this because they were being held hostage by communists and they were trying to stop mccarthy from exposing communists in the army.
