GWSS 262 – LECTURE 3
Center Snap: Children Creating the Fiction of Gender
Center that keeps the sport from not being completely inclusive (sviii)
Most influential sports are still the ones that make the most money --> physical power and
aggression
oEverything else is alternative sports
oDomination and privilege
oActively constructed by and for men
oGap between girls and boys participating in sports in high school
2016-2017
Boys in HS sports = 4,563,238
Girls in HS sports = 3,400,297
There are more girls participating steadily each year, but boys as well.
The gap is therefore maintained
oColleges and universities
US college women athletes still lack opportunities to participate
A gendered moment analyzed on three levels
1. Social interaction
2. Structural context
3. Cultural symbol
Gendered moment
oAggressive sea monsters vs Barbie
Performativity:
Judith Butler: we must "do" gender (because gender is not something that we "have" but rather
something we "do")
To continue make meaning for people on whether they are masculine, feminine, etc.
Actively constructing how we are read by others
We're often times not knowingly performing femininity / masculinity
Makes sense if you understand social construction
Limits of Butler's Theory
We think of "performance" as something we choose to do
oBut it's not a complete choice
o5 year olds girls don't dance around Barbie to make sure other people know they are
girls
If you don't look at the structural and cultural context of gender performance, then that
interaction or moment in time can just be interpreted as "free agents" acting out the inevitable
surface manifestations of a natural inner essence of sex difference"
