All men were created equal was interpreted in different ways. The british were fighting for the king, colonists fought for their lives. Sept 17, 1776 nyc was under sieged: in 1 hr, 4k british troops stormed the city and washington"s troops retreated, by sept 20, the british burned down a quarter of nyc. More than 3k colonists were placed in prison ships in nyc harbor. Prisoners would die in the ships: 9 in 10. More colonists died on prison ships than in the battles (3 times more, total 12k)
