Law as violence prevention (three main connections between law and violence) Law as a source of social order: without social order, violence will ensue in addition to other problems. Law as a dispute resolver: without this, violence can also occur if there isn"t a civil way to dispute. Law as facilitator of social change: alternative: violence through revolution. Ultimately, law is meant to reduce/get rid of violence. Ex: shifting route of people crossing border, making it harder to cross: leads to more people dying as a result. Ex: prohibiting substances (guns, drugs, alcohol: creates black market. Ex: second amendment: gun violence in the nation spawns from the law protecting our rights to bear arms. Ex: protests/riots triggered in response to a law being passed/legal rulings: gay marriage -> hate crimes. Ex: mass incarceration: severity of sentences/wrongfully convicted to death, greater population in prisons = increase of spread of infectious disease.
