Judicial review- r eview by the us supreme court of the constitutional validity of a legislative act. Jurisdiction- power of a court to hear a dispute and to speak the law. Jurisdiction over persons or property- power of a court to compel the presence of the parties to a dispute to appear before the court and litigate. Long-arm statutes- courts use these for non-resident parties based on minimum contacts with state. Jurisdiction over subject matter- limitation on the types of cases a court can hear (usually determined by federal or state statutes) Jurisdiction of federal courts- deal with federal law, crime, patents, trademarks or between two states. Proper venue, usually where the injury occurred. Standing to sue- sufficient stake in the controversy, the party must have suffered a legal injury. Appellate courts- determine whether the trial was according to procedural and substantive rules of law.
