Swing era came to a close rather abruptly after the end of wwii: economics: high inflation priced big bands out of the ballrooms. Labels began promoting vocalist >>> instrumentalists: changing tastes in popular music, rhythm, blues, and country music become more popular. Swinging seemed "old fashioned: a "cooling off period": americans who endured a major depression followed by the world war preferred to hear softer ballads >>>> novelty songs. Jump bands: after 1945, jazz splintered into three primacy camps: Jump bands: bebop, cool, had elements of swing, but relied more heavily on rhythm & blues. Swinging r&b: didn"t play vibraphone (what he usually plays) but sang a simple scat based lyrics, trumpeter and clarinetist improvised solos, wordless vocals, nonsense syllables, live performance = call and response routine with members of the audience.
