Hunger = physical discomfort experienced by individuals who have consumed insufficient amounts of food. Food intake is adequate, but food quality, variety, and/or desirability reduces. Food intake is not always adequate due to lack of food access and availability. Average: per person per week for food. 33% less for food insecure (~ per person per week) Income, ethnicity, head of household, location of home. 16% of families in us living below the poverty line. Parts of the country where access to fresh fruit, vegetables, and other healthful whole foods are low. At risk if they deny themselves food in order to feed their children. Poverty rates highest among older women and those living alone. Malnutrition: a state of poor nutritional health that can be improved by adjustments in nutrient intake. Children: lack of adequate energy to support optimal growth. Adults: lack of adequate energy to maintain a healthy, active body. Edema (swelling) due to low protein content of blood.
