Yugoslavia (february 12, 2016: break up of yugoslavia: ethnic cleansing (emerges from this conflict). War fought on identity lines, what europeans do when mass genocide occurs in their own backyard (americans too). Emerged from ottoman/hapsburg empires: germans invaded yugoslavia in. Three groups that were fighting: czechniks, communists (partisans won the war), croatians (sided with hitler). B. wwii: tito"s victory: communist party rule, stopped ethnic nationalism: required to identify with the state but not with ethnic group. Multinational state, he was afraid it would fall apart if people aligned with ethnicities: six republics: bosnia,croatia, macedonia,montenegro,serbia, slovenia. Balance of power within yugoslavia: two provinces:(some autonomy but doesn"t have a vote), kosovo, vojvodina. C. after tito (1980): prohibition against expression ethnic nationalism dies too. 90% kosovo are ethnic albanians (secular sunni muslims). Wanted the vote. under the thumb of the ethnic albanians. Started rallying to prevent it from getting independent status.
