Document Summary
Social facilitation is the tendency for the presence of others to enhance our performance on simple tasks and impair performance on complex tasks. Social norms: shared expectations about how people should think, feel, and behave. Regulates daily behavior without our conscious awareness. Social role: a set of norms that characterizes how people in a given social position ought to behave. Conformity: the adjustment of individual behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs to a group standard. Normative social influence: conforming in order to be accepted by other people and to avoid rejection. Informational social influence: following others because we believe that they are right. Students were asked to judge which of the three comparison line was the same length as a standard line. 37% of participants conformed to the incorrect group answer. Conformity increases as group size increases (up to 5 members) One person disagreeing with the others greatly reduces group conformity. Be highly committed to its point of view.
