Developmental psychology: examines biological, physical, psychological, and behavioral changes that occur as we age. Critical period: certain experiences must occur for development to proceed normally. Sensitive period: an optimal range for certain experiences. Younger children are in an optimal time to learn that additional language compared to an older age. Cross-sectional design: compared people of different ages at the same point in time. Allows data from many age groups to be collected relatively quickly. 100 five year olds, 100 twenty year olds, 100 fifty year olds. Could have had different contributions other than human development. Longitudinal design: repeatedly testing the same cohort as it grows older. Same group of five year olds come back when they"re ten, twenty, etc. People may drop out of the study over time. Germinal stage: first two weeks after conception o o. Repeated cell division: attaches to mother"s uterus about 10-14 days after conception. Embryonic stage: embryo develops during weeks 2-8 o.
