Schizophrenia: severe disturbances in thinking, speech, perception, emotion, and behavior. Psychotic disorder: involves a loss of contact with reality, and bizarre behaviors and experiences. Positive: bizarre behaviors such as delusions, hallucinations, and disordered speech and thinking. Hearing things (excess) that aren"t there: negative: absence of normal reactions; a lack of emotional expressions loss of motivation, and an absence of speech. Negative symptoms are associated with poorer prognosis than positive symptoms. Treatment depends on predominance of either positive or negative symptoms. Schizophrenia affects 1-2% of the population: about 10% remain permanently impaired, about 65% show intermittent periods of normal functioning, about 25% recover from the disorder. Closer relationship increases the likelihood of developing schizophrenia. Neurodegenerative hypothesis: destruction of neural tissue can cause schizophrenia. Mild to moderate brain atrophy and enlarged ventricles. Abnormalities are more common in patients who exhibit negative symptoms. Dopamine hypothesis: (has more to do with positive symptoms)
