Seasonal affective disorder (sad): depressive episodes that display a seasonal pattern. Nearly 1 in 5 americans will have a clinically depressive episode at least once. Depression is on the rise among young people (15 - 19 year olds) Women are about twice as likely as men to experience unipolar depression. Initial episode typically lasts 3 - 5 months without treatment. 50% will experience a recurrence about 3 year after the initial episode. Bipolar disorder has astronger gentic basis than unipolar depression. 70% for identical twins; 10% for fraternal.
