Infants and children: spend longest time sleeping. Children - ~8-10 hours/day: half the time is spent in rem, show greater percentage of slow-wave-sleep. Young adults: sleep 7-8 hours/night sleeping, 20% spent in rem. Elderly adults: sleep 6 hours/night, 15% is spent in rem, slow-wave-sleep decreases from 30-50 years of age. The older we get, the less sleep we get and less time is spent in rem and slow-wave-sleep. Insomnia: chronic inability to get sufficient sleep, subjective. Inability to produce hypocretin (chemical used by body to keep one awake: treatment: Provides continuous flow of air through nasal passages (2) weight loss (3) tongue guard. Prevents back of tongue from collapsing into the throat (4) surgery (last resort) Night terrors: sudden arousal from sleep and extreme panic, person will often cry and be out of breath (sympathetic nervous system is on overdrive, occurs during sws/transitions between stages.
