Document Summary

Encoding: code and put into memory. Sensory memory: focus is on encoding, function: Holds info that enters the senses for a short time while we select what is important. Information is then held in an unprocessed form after the physical stimulus is no longer available: each sensory system has a separate memory store. Photographic picture-image memory lasting no more than a 1/4 of a second. Momentary memory of auditory information: has large capacity, duration: 1/4-1/2 second for iconic memory; 2-3 seconds for echoic memory. Organizing information in much more meaningful groups. Allows overcoming limits of short term memory. Info remains for less than 30 seconds if not rehearsed. Repeat info to keep it from fading while in stm. Information is actively reviewed and related to information already in ltm. Stored representation of all that a person knows. So we"re not aware of the billions of information that"s currently in our ltm.
