Document Summary
Lecture 11: primate social behavior: feedingcompetition, strength in numbers , larger groups can chase away solitary individuals or smaller groups. Two types of competition: scramble, resources are spread out (cannot monopolize) o no direct confrontation. Best strategy = grab what you can, don"t bother fighting others no need for groups: contest, resources are clumped (can monopolize) o direct confrontation. But there are costs to living in groups. More groups members = more competition within the group for resources. = the fixed area where an animal, or group of animals, lives: might overlap with others" home ranges. = a fixed area that is defended against intrusion by other members of the same species: in other words, a defended home range. Defending a territory is costly: animals are only expected to be territorial when the benefits outweigh the costs. When resources are relatively close together: can"t defend resources that are too widely spread out, might depend on the type of habitat.
