Metabolism conversion of food intake into valuable products for growth and energy (burning or building); change chemicals in cells: energy use mainly resting energy 20% used by brain (keep up membrane potentials) Half of resting energy goes to transport (across cell membranes) Endergonic putting energy into a chemical, need energy to move object up. Spontaneous object will fall down hill if at top. More potential energy when object is at top of hill. 1st law of thermodynamics energy is conserved (never lost) 2nd law of thermodynamics randomness (entropy, change s) increases. Break molecule into parts more random, more degrees of freedom (moves around more), increased entropy. Higher energy barrier reaction takes longer. Many molecules needed to reach the top of the hill.
