Document Summary

An interdisciplinary science: ranging in size from the atom to the planet. Have to understand concepts before we understand the science. Bis 2a: focus on cells and basics of life. One of the most vital skill sets. Not the real thing but help us to try to understand that thing. Simplifying assumptions help to simplify models further. A way of testing the success of a model compared to the real thing. Tends to say things as if we know it but nothing is hard fact in science. Everything we know is to the best of our understanding. Is experiment disagrees then the explanation is wrong. Hypothesis: educated explanation for an event or observation. Alternative hypothesis: (the normal hypothesis) what is believed. Null hypothesis: what is true if the alternative hypothesis is false. Essentially the opposite of what is believed (cannot fully prove an alternative to be right, so prove null wrong instead) Controls: independent variables kept constant throughout experiment.
