Document Summary
Population is a collection of the same species in the same place at the same time. Population density is the individuals of a species per unit area. Exponential/geometric: per capita growth rate: constant rate or density independent. Species colonizing new areas such as trees exponential growth via pollen accumulation in a new area. Population growth in closed population (no i or e) Nt+1 = nt+b-d b= birth rate per capita b=b(nt) b-d=r d= death rate per capita d=d(nt) Key: when population increases, b is greater than d or r is positive. Density dependent regulation: per capita birth and death rate depend on population density. Density increase if birth rate increases and death rate decreases. Two types of species r selected (traits successful when density are far from k value and pop is driven by r): more reproduction at younger age for more total offspring.
