Document Summary

Community: a group of species that coexist & interact within defined area. **communities may assemble in newly created habitat (e. g. an infant gut, a volcanic island, a pitcher plant) or reassemble following disturbance, the removal of organisms by physical (volcanic eruptions, waves, fire) or biological (grazers, burrowers) processes. Pattern of changing species composition as result of colonization & species interactions in new habitat or after disturbance. Primary succession: substrate that does not have any living organisms. Secondary succession: substrate has been disturbed but contains legacy of organisms that lived there before. Cyclical succession: pattern of change in community composition due to recurring events/changing interactions between plants & animals. 1 year later: first life observed was wind-dispersed spiders & insects. 2 years later: first plant to colonize = prairie lupine. 3 years later: plants without benefit of rhizobia fared poorly. 30 years later: development of new forest is being delayed by repeated browsing/damage from elk.
