Wonder drug, not discovered until 1928 by alexander fleming. 2 problems: low yield & sensitive to stomach acid. 1930s-1940s search for better strains of fungus, released to public in 1945. Number antibiotics made/approved keep decreasing, less to fight bacteria. Antibiotic crisis: very few new antibiotics being developed & medicine that get through do not last. Teixobactin no new class has been found since 1987. The primary form of cell division & reproduction in prokaryotes is known as binary fission. Reproduction in bacteria/archaea is very dependent on environment. Selection - prokaryotes are haploid so selection happens quickly. Competitive ability to absence of antibiotic/stressful environments. Lateral (horizontal) gene transfer exchange genetic material b/w different species/domains. 2 bacteria near each other, sex pilus/conjugation tube forms. Not connected for that long, small pieces of genome/chromosome or plasmids. Ability of bacteria to take dna from environment. Dna makes cell make pieces of virus, starts assembling.
