Micr2420 last part of course (worth 40% of final) vaccines, Guaranteed survival of people who contracts illnesses, golden age of microbiology. Early 1940s , florey and chaim purified the compound (penicillin g), and demonstrated its chemotherapeutic properties. Naturally produced antibiotics are secondary metabolites (by-products of metabolism) of bacteria and fungi. Can be carried on plasmids or phage (if required for bacteria) Have one or more genes that is a means of resistance to antibiotics. Flagged by sequences that allow them to recombine and plant themselves into those genomes. Can move form genome to plasmid, plasmid to genome. Very rapid horizontal transfer of a number of genes. The genes they carry are called a gene cassette. All the genes become integrated into the host chromosome. May acquire genes for multiple effects (grow a capsid, antibiotic strain resistance) Drugs target critical & unique aspects of the bacterial cell physiology- they are selectively toxic:
