BIS 2C Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Mitosis, Asexual Reproduction, Meiosis
Document Summary
Photoautotrophs: co2 + h2o -> (ch2o) + o2. Plants need oxygen to survive (mitochondria = oxidative phosphorylation) Key adaptations permitted plants to colonize land. Vascular tissues led to rapid diversification of land plants. Major clades of plantae evolved from first photosynthetic eukaryote. Key evolutionary innovations evolved among aquatic plantae. Land plants fall into 10 major clades. Q: most of mass of wood came from: co2 from air (wood is carbon- based) Plantae: endosymbiosis w/ cyanobacteria (chlorophyll a, phycobilins, peptidoglycan in cp wall) Had to lose cell wall to do endosymbiosis - phagocytosis for mitochondria. Loss of flagella = no swimming stages in entire life cycle. Loss of phycobilins -> chlorophyll b + starch storage. Closest relative to land plants, thought to be siser group of land plants. Have branching & apial growth form, as in most land plants. Close relationship to coleochaetophytes & land plants confirmed by gene sequencing. Streptophytes: all green algae other than chlorophytes, plus land plants.
