Document Summary

Che2a lecture 17 valence bond theory and orbital hybridization; types of hybridization. Steps to determine whether a molecule is polar or nonpolar: draw the lewis structure of the molecule and determine its molecular geometry. For molecules with resonance structures, use any: determine whether the molecule contains polar bonds. Use a periodic table that gives the electronegativity values of each element. If the sum is zero, the molecule is nonpolar, and if it is something nonzero, the molecule is polar. Vectors in one dimension: two vectors of the same direction are added, two vectors of apposite directions are subtracted, two vectors of different directions but of equal size cancel each other out. 120 from each other will cancel: the dipole moments of three identical polar bonds in a t shape arrangement will not cancel. Specifically, a chemical covalent bond results from the overlap of two half-filled orbitals by spin-pairing the two valence electrons.
