Document Summary
Chapter 23 the aeneid of virgil. Introduction the aeneid of virgil: virgil draws upon a greek myth and a homeric form to declare what he thinks is the essence of the roman. It is a historical myth told in epic poetry, and very much about roman origins and roman identity. The chief theme of the poem, around which all of its symbolism turns, is the struggle required to found the roman race. The opening lines of the poem emphasize aeneas" suffering and struggle: The source of this struggle is juno (hera), who hates trojans and loves carthage, and so she also hates aeneas and the roman race he begets. The destiny of aeneas (the trojan who lived) In homer"s iliad, aeneas comes before achilles in his wrath, but is rescued by poseidon, who says that zeus has a greater destiny for him.
