The foundation of english is germanic, but most of its words come. It was profoundly influenced by latin for 2 reasons from latin. Greek has also had an influence on english because some latin has greek in it. In the work place and more formal places we use more latin, either from french or directly lating. (school, college, prescription, etc) The alphabet we use in english comes from the romans, who used to write in latin.
