Time Preference
o Humans prefer things now rather than later
o People pay premiums to have something now rather than early
o This is a common feature in all people
o This shows up in history through positive interest rates
o In ancient civilizations, loan rates were in the region of 10% so returns were very
high on investments
o No it’s a lot loer eause of taes o top of these returs
o Return = p (time preference) + d (risk) + [k(constant)*growth rate of income]
In preindustrial world, there is no growth rate of income
in preindustrial societies, asset holding was extremely risky
o interest rates could have been really high because roman numerals were used
heavily so it was really easy to use 10%
however there were cases in which the interest rate was 12% or 13% so
there was a lot of variation
o in early society, there was a lot of time preference
over a life time, you can go from being poor to extremely rich
people never did this in the medieval world because they wanted things
to happen now rather late in their lifetimes
