ENT 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Vas Deferens, Ejaculatory Duct, Spermatheca
Document Summary
Accessory gland secretes material that surrounds sperm as a packet or spermatophore. Eggs produced in ovaries, move into oviduct, mixed with sperm from spermatheca. Spermatheca stores sperm to fertilize eggs over time. Store sperm for a lifetime, store sperm for 2 to 3 years. Small and short life expectancy; need to find mate fast. Use landscapes, edges, treefalls, mountain tops, food plants. Females need fats and proteins for eggs, so food is very attractive. Males use various display cues to attract females. Male beetles may have greatly enlarged jaws or horns for fighting other males to attract females. Orchids parasitize insects by imitating the pheromones of female wasps and get pollinated by the males. Multiple levels of parasitism: the wasps are parasites of other insects. All social insects do this but termites cannot do this. Females may mate multiple times, sperm from different mates compete to fertilize eggs.
