Part 10 Fish:
• There are four main categories of fish.
• The jawless fish include
1. the hagfish
2. lampreys.
• They have a cartilage backbone and use an oral disk to attach to prey.
• Sharks, rays and ratfish are Cartilaginous fish that have:
1. cartilaginous skeleton
2. gill slits
3. fins.
• The have specialized cells that allow them to sense electricity.
• Bony fishes have a bony skeleton and a cover that protects their gills.
• The fins of Ray-finned fish are supported by rays and are what we commonly think of as
fish.
• Fish have a two-chamber heart: one chamber receives blood, the other pumps it out.
• Most fish get oxygen from water.
• Most fish have 4 pairs of gills enclosed in a gill chamber on each side of the head.
• To get oxygen, fish gulp water through their mouth and pump it over the gills.
• The Lobe-finned fish include lungfish that have gills and a pair of air sacs that resemble
lungs.
