Immune System Part 1:
Skin is our first level of protection against disease.
The surface layer is composed of dead cells, has a low pH so it is hard for bacteria to live
there, has chemicals that will disrupt some viruses, and has a normal flora of bacteria that
will crowd out other bacteria.
Any invader that enters the body is called an antigen.
Humans have a Specific Immune Response that means we have the ability to recognize
antigens and produce antibodies.
Antigen means an antibody generator.
An antigen will have specific proteins on its surface.
Antibodies are proteins produced by our bodies to fight antigens.
Antibodies generally have a Y shape but produce specific shapes at top of the Y that will
match up with and dock to specific antigens.
This marks the antigen so white blood cells called macrophages can recognize the
antigen.
Macrophages will engulf the marked antigen and secrete enzymes and lysosomes that
will destroy it.
Lymphocytes are another type of white blood cell.
There are two types of lymphocytes B and T.
B lymphocytes are:
1. produced in bone marrow
2. promote a humoral response
3. produce antibodies.
