Respiratory System:
Air enters the human respiratory system through the nose, where it is warmed and
moistened.
Next it flows through:
1. the pharynx
2. into the larynx
3. is directed toward the trachea by the position of the epiglottis.
The trachea branches into:
1. two bronchi
2. finer branches called bronchioles.
The alveoli are little thin-walled air sacs located
- at the tips of the finest bronchioles.
Gas exchange occurs between the air in:
1. the alveoli
2. blood in pulmonary capillaries.
These structures allow fresh air to get to the air sacs that are surrounded by tiny blood
vessels
- Or capillaries.
Oxygen passes through these air sacs and travels through the capillary walls into the
bloodstream.
At the same time, carbon dioxide transfers from the bloodstream into the air sacs where it
gets breathed out of the body.
Air pollution is a serious problem that causes:
1. various human diseases
