Urinary system:
The main function of the urinary system is to rid the body of excess water and unwanted
solutes.
Humans have two kidneys to filter blood and produce urine
The composition and volume of the fluid in living organisms must be kept within a
limited range for homeostasis.
Kidneys:
1. filter water,
2. filter mineral ions
3. filter nitrogen rich wastes
4. produce urine.
Urine flows from each kidney into a ureter.
The ureters connect to the urinary bladder that stores urine.
A sphincter controls the opening into the urethra.
Smooth muscle in the bladder contracts when stretch receptors are stimulated.
If the voluntary sphincter is:
1. Relaxed
2. the force of the bladder contraction propels urine out of the body through the
urethra
Blood enters the kidney through the renal artery and leaves the kidney through the renal
vein.
The renal artery branches into arterioles and capillaries.
A nephron is a kidney tubule and the associated capillaries that cleanse the blood and
form urine through:
1. Filtration
2. Absorption
3. secretion.
