NPB 10 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Representational State Transfer, Acetylcholine, Oligodendrocyte
Document Summary
The nervous system: controller of body function voluntary and involuntary, processes sensory info. Consciously perceived and non-consciously perceived: communication long and short distances, specific (cid:862)maki(cid:374)g de(cid:272)isio(cid:374)s(cid:863) a(cid:271)out sti(cid:373)uli voluntary and involuntary. Primary cells of nervous system: neuron communication cell, glial support function of neurons. Action potential (ap) traveling electrical signal: arises at cell body, travels through axon. Synapse connection b/w a neuron and the target cell controlled by the neuron. Neurotransmitters signal molecules released by neuron when ap reaches the axon terminus. They are stored at the axon terminals, sitting in the vesicles. Neurotransmission neuron controls or communicates with a target using neurotransmitters. The response is very specific and very fast. Neurotransmitter receptors bind to the neurotransmitter biological effect in target tissue. The target cell has a special protein that is a receptor of the neurotransmitter. The receptor is very specific and they bind only to certain neurotransmitters. Receptor: ex: glutamate generally excites tissue.
