NPB 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Fixed Action Pattern, Decapod Anatomy
Lecture 13
Components of Instinctive Behaviors
- Releaser = sign stimulus
o Cues that induce fixed action pattern (FAP)
- Innate releasing mechanism
o Hypothetical neural system that connects releaser to FAP
- Fixed action pattern (FAP)
o The behavior (motor responses)
Central Pattern Generators
- Group of cells in the CNS that produce a pattern of signals that triggers a functional
behavior response
o Example:
▪ Locomotion
▪ Ventilatory movements
▪ Communication signals
Sea Slug
- Tactile stimulation – being touched
- Fixed action pattern – swimming sequence
- Innate releasing mechanism
- Experimentation:
o Dorsal flexion neuron (backward bending)
o Ventral flexion neuron (forward bending)
o
o They noticed that DFN and VFN alternate/oscillates
How is Rhythmic Activity Generated
- In many system, peripheral feedback is not required for basic rhythm
o Loscust flight control
o Crayfish swimmeret activity
o Tritonia swimming
- Feedback may modify properties such as rate of rhythm
- DRI depolarize
- DSI fires and activating C2
- DSI inhibits VSI at the same time
- C2 activates DFN a and DFN b
- C2 activates VSI
- VSI activates VFN
- DSI supplements DFN a firing
- DFN a gets double stimulated
