Begins with tube (esophagus) that runs 26 feet, length of digestive tract. Food empties, goes into small intestine w/ help of gallbladder and pancreas. Pancreas supplies digestive enzyme, gallbladder supplies agent to help process fats. Food moves into small intestine, longest portion. 1st phase of digestion: physical digestion (move & grind food, chewing, mixing food w/ saliva) Esophagus moves food into stomach where it is blenderized. Obesity surgery cinches stomach and narrows capacity to -3 tablespoons rather than 4 cups. Helps person feel full immediately after very small meal. Upper part of intestinal tract (mouth, esophagus, stomach) 2nd phase of digestion: chemical digestion (chemical breakdown of food using digestive enzymes) Attack (w/ digestive enzymes) bonds in protein, carbs, fat, break them apart into smaller units. Stomach, small intestine involved in chemical digestion.
