Document Summary

Kwashiorkor occurs when someone is not getting enough protein in their diet. Usually seen in first born children in undeveloped countries after they are weaned from mother"s breast milk & given poor sources of protein, such as root vegetables. Child has edema followed by emaciated look. Protein-calorie malnutrition occurs when someone is not getting enough calories. Characterized by severe wasting of muscle & fat due to body breaking itself down for fuel. Measuring n losses is the best way to estimate protein need. 100 grams of protein = 16 grams of n (n is 16% by weight) Perfect protein: 9 eaas in amounts proportional; eggs or breast milk. Add two standard deviations; 31 -> 40 kg. If 100 = perfect, 70 = typical protein in diet (mix of beans, meats, grains, dairy soy) Adjustment = 56 g protein/day for 70 kg woman or man. Rda for men/women per unit body weight is the same.
