Meat packing industry was born in chicago. Allowed fruit to be sen long distances. Swift and company ushered in the era of cheap beef. Pioneered the use of animal products for the manufacture of soap, glue, fertilizer, medical products, etc. 1923- -invented a system of packing frozen food into waxed cardboard boxes and flash freezing under high pressure. Establishments of the earliest cafeterias and chains of lunch counters and fast food establishments. First burger chain: white castle, chicago 1921.
