Document Summary

Many types of discrimination: nationality/race/gender/sexual orientation/religion/ethnicity/weight/criminal status/age/class/wealth/diseases/etc. Stereotyping and prejudice affect everyone: affect majorities and minorities alike, high status and low status group, hurt your self-esteem no matter who you are. Highly consequential: genocide/hate crime (holocaust, subtle everyday biases. Prejudice: general attitude structure and it"s affective emotional component. Typically refers to negative attitude, but can be positive too: benevolent sexism: women should stay at home not in the military, where they"re safe . Everyday usage of term often refers to something broader: Everyone has a stereotype, if you grew up in america. Not everyone has prejudice, so not everyone discriminates (the pool gets smaller) stereotype > prejudice > discrimination. Social categorization: classification of people into groups based on common attributes. Outgroup homogeneity effect: assume more similarity among members of outgroup than among in group members: men think all women are all nurturing and loving, all asians are good at math.
