ANTHRO 139K - Lecture 7 - Bartky's Feminist Critique of the Theories of Michel Foucault
Objective
To critically investigate the theories of Foucault to understand how the bodies and
minds of people are shaped by modern forms of power that involve each individual’s
own, Internalized, self-disciplinary practices of conformation and compliance.
To evaluate Foucault’s theories from Bartky’s critique: The subject of Foucault’s theories
is assumed to be a white male, and the modern models of power that he theorizes are
“Western” and patriarchal. Gender must be taken into account as girls and women are
socialized to become “docile bodies” that comply with “Western” patriarchal standards
of normative femininity.
Bartky helps to illuminate that – besides gender -- Foucault’s theories need to be
critically analyzed with regard to sexual orientation, class, race, ethnicity, religion,
nation, age, disability, etc., in relation to modern “Western” patriarchal models of
power.
Intersectional Feminist Theory
A critical approach to the formation of and issues pertaining to social identity. (Kimberle
Williams Crenshaw, 1980s)
Intersectional analyses takes into account all of the categories that contribute to an
individual’s social identity, including: race, ethnicity, cultural background, national
origin, religion, class, sexual orientation, age, physical and cognitive challenges, etc.
Individuals are impacted to various degrees and in different ways by overlapping and
“interlocking systems of oppression” in relation to the make-up of their complex social
identities.
Interlocking systems of oppression form a “matrix of domination” that operates on
three primary domains:
The personal
Direct one on one interaction.
The reference group
Family, club, congregation, classroom, etc.
The institutional
Dominant society
Fortified through histories of knowledge that generate ideologies
that designate the marginalized.
RESISTANCE: Such as in developing critical recognition and thought, and a strong
emphasis on self-regard over objectification.
